I heard somewhere that herbs loose 30-50% of their nutrients and taste during transport before we can even buy them at the store. This was alarming to me, so I decided it was time to add a kitchen herb garden to my already thriving garden & I think you should be too! Imagine grabbing some fresh oregano for your pasta dish or making fresh salsa with everyone’s favorite herb cilantro(well at least it’s mine).

A kitchen herb garden is a great way to get started with gardening or a great way to expand what you already have- no green thumb is required!

Why grow a kitchen herb garden?

  • Fresh ingredients make your meals shine with incredible flavors.
  • We could all use a price reduction at the grocery store.
  • Itโ€™s so convenient to grab the herb we need right from our own home.
  • This little garden with bring a little charm to your home.

Great herbs to start with

  • BASIL
  • PARSLEY
  • MINT
  • ROSEMARY
  • CLINANTRO
  • THYME
  • OREGANO
  • CHIVES

Where to put an herb garden

  • sunny spot where it gets 6-8 hours or sunlight
  • somewhere that won’t be hard to get to
  • in the ground or in a container

If you live in an area of the country that gets too cold to have an outdoor garden all year, start you herbs in containers in side somewhere then move outside once you have thawed out.

some great ideas for where to to put your herb garden might be in mason jars in your window sill, hanging planter baskets are darling and save space. A vertical garden could go on a fence, or a wall, making for a very interesting display.

Lets plant

  • start with seedlings or seeds, seeds take longer to get started so keep that in mind
  • make sure you have nutrient rich soil that drains well. Mix together potting soil, sand & compost.
  • water your herbs when the top inch of the soil feels dry (here in FL, that means watering daily if yours herbs are outside)

Caring for your herb garden

  • pruning regularly will encourage new growth.
  • herbs don’t need heavy feeding, use organic fertilizer once a month
  • cheeky pests will try to attack your herbs, so keep an eye out and use natural pest control such as soap water or a netting.

My kitchen herb garden

For my kitchen herb garden I decided to mix my herbs into my already established garden beds, I did add some seeds to attempt to grow cilantro and chives. I also used a cute planter that I attached to my fence post. I just love the way the pot looks on the posts & I can’t wait for my herbs to grow and hang, I just love the look of a healthy & thriving garden!
