If you’re looking for a fun-filled, family-friendly getaway in Florida, look no further than Colt Creek State Park! Nestled in the heart of the state, this hidden gem offers everything from peaceful campgrounds to outdoor adventures, making it the perfect destination for both seasoned campers and those new to the outdoors.

What to Expect

Colt Creek State Park is a spacious, 5,000-acre park located near Lakeland, FL. It offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, with sprawling forests, picturesque ponds, and a variety of wildlife. Whether you’re pitching a tent, parking your RV, or just spending the day, this park has something for everyone.

Campgrounds and Accommodations

Tent camping and RV sites are available, offering a chance to sleep under the stars or enjoy the comforts of your RV. The sites are well-maintained & spacious. Most sites were gravel, however there were a couple that were fully paved. Every site is equipped with picnic tables, grills, and electric & water hook ups at RV sites.

The restrooms with showers are centrally located & I found the facilities to be very clean. There is even an area behind the restroom for doing dishes as well as for purchasing ice. Washers & dryers are also located by the restrooms. I loved that they had a bulletin board with events listed for extra fun. They also had a book exchange house, so bring a book & take a book!

The campsites are located around a loop which makes for a nice walk or bike ride. There wasn’t much shade to speak of, so remember your extra tents for sun blocking.

If you’re looking for a more rustic experience, some sites are tucked away in quieter areas of the park, giving you a true sense of escape, And even glamping opportunities.

  • Tent Sites: $24 per night
  • RV Sites: $30 per night
  • Primitive Campsites: $18 per night

Tips for Camping at Colt Creek State Park

  • Reservations: It’s always a good idea to book your campsite in advance, especially on weekends and holidays. You can make a reservation online through the Florida State Parks website.
  • Bring Sunscreen and Bug Repellent: While the park is beautiful, it’s also home to Florida’s warm, sunny weather and the occasional mosquito. Be sure to protect your skin while exploring.
  • Stay Hydrated: There’s plenty of walking to do, so bring water with you on the trails and during any outdoor activities.
  • No service : we were shocked when we arrived and had little to no cell service, so make sure to tell others that you might be unable to answer messages or calls. We also took the opportunity when we left the campground to download a movie for nighttime. But it made for an even more relaxing time not constantly checking our phones, we got to totally unplug.
  • Sun Shade: Make sure to be prepared with extra awnings or sun canopies to block the sun.

Costs and Fees

  • Park Entry Fee: $5 per vehicle (for up to 8 people)
  • Camping Fees: As mentioned above, tent camping starts at $24 per night, while RV sites are $30 per night.
  • Additional Costs: If you plan on renting equipment (canoes, kayaks, etc.), be sure to check availability and prices with the park ahead of time.
