Inspiration at the craft store
I was minding my business shopping for fabric at JoAnns when I spotted this cute birthday cake fabric & I knew it had to be mine. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it just yet, but there I was getting 1/2 a yard of it because I couldn’t resist. Later I realize my daughters birthday was fast approaching & since I was very into fabric aplicay lately, I decided I would use this fabric for a birthday t-shit for my girl.
Materials
- t shirt
- scissors
- candle stencil
- fabric glue bond

Lets get crafting
I have become a huge fan on Canva lately and this is where I made my candle template. I found a candle from elements that I liked & I sized it to be and printed it on my printer. Next I cut out the candles and traced them onto my fabric & cut them out. Then I made 6 candles because my daughter is turning 6, but you can make whatever number of candles you need for your special birthday person. Depending on the amount of candles or the size of the shirt you are putting the candles on you may want to make the candles bigger or smaller.
I needed a shirt and found a cute ruffled shirt at Target that I thought would be perfect & didn’t break the bank. While there I found some fabric glue bond that I thought Iโd try just to avoid having to go to another store.
I decided on my layout for the candles then I applied my glue bond to the candles & applied them to the shirt & smoothed them out. The shirt turned out absolutely darling. Iโm so excited for my daughter to wear it for her birthday.

Instructions
- Go to Canva (it is free!) & pick out a candle you like, I made mine 4.5×3/4 but that will depend on the amount of candles you need & the size of the shirt you are applying the design to. print the design and & cut it out.
- Next trace the design on the back of the fabric so you can’t see the lines from tracing, then cut out the design.
- Decide on a layout for your candles on your shirt, I like to lay mine out & get it looking just right.
- I used this fabric tape, but you could use heat bond or another fabric glue, I cut the strips down to size so they wouldn’t show through my candle, then I peeled & stuck them to the shirt.
Birthday Time
I love the look of this cute shirt & my daughter really thought it was cute. I plan to take some cute pictures of her in it & on her actual birthday. I really think it’s important to make a big deal of birthdays. People love feeling special on their birthday & this is just one way to make someone feel super special on their birthday by telling the whole world “HEY IT’S MY BIRTHDAY!”

I hope you make this t-shirt or that it inspires you to make something similar. As always if you make it, share it cause we all love a show & tell, tag me on IG @homesweetmartins.
