If your family loves treasure hunts, salty air, and a little bit of adventure and have always wondered where to find sharks teeth in Florida, then shark teeth hunting at Caspersen Beach is a must-do Florida experience. Located in Venice, Floridaโ€”often called the โ€œShark Tooth Capital of the Worldโ€โ€”this beach is famous for its prehistoric treasures hidden in the sand.

We finally made it to Caspersen Beach after years of dreaming of visiting. We had such a wonderful day, it was as if we were stepping into a real-life treasure hunt. Every scoop of sand could reveal something incredible: a tiny fossilized shark tooth thatโ€™s millions of years old!

In my opinion this is a must add to your Florida travel bucket list.

Why Caspersen Beach Is So Special

Pictured is the sifter I made using plastic pipes, pool noodles, zip ties and wire mesh. I have seen these sold in kits online or at local beach shops. I also found a metal ladle which I used to scoop the sand onto my sifter. However I did see lots of people using long handled sifters. Whatever you use the chances of finding at least one tooth is high. Some people suggested going out deeper in the water to find larger teeth however oddly enough I found my largest tooth suck in the rocks!

Unlike many Florida beaches known for white sand and seashells, Caspersen Beach has darker sand mixed with fossil-rich sediment. Over time, waves wash fossilized shark teeth from ancient underwater deposits onto the shore.

These teeth often appear black, dark gray, or brown because theyโ€™ve been fossilized for thousandsโ€”or even millionsโ€”of years. Which just blows my mind!

Common shark teeth you might find include:

  • Tiger shark
  • Lemon shark
  • Sand tiger shark
  • Bull shark
  • Occasionally even megalodon fragments

Unfortunately the area was hit very hard by a couple of hurricanes and the actual entrance and main beach access is current closed and under restoration. However you can park just outside of the entrance at a public beach parking lot. From there you can choose to walk the beach line down to the actual beach, or choose to stay at that beach because there are plenty of teeth there.
We took the walk down the shore to explore the rocks but mostly hung out by the parking area. I will confess on all of the visits we have made the waves were rough so just be prepared to keep a close eye on the kids!

Best Time to Find Shark Teeth

While you can find shark teeth anytime, heading to the beach at low tide is best, so check tide charts before you go. The receding water exposes fresh fossil layers.

Another great time for hunting shark teeth is after storms or rough waves. This can churn up the ocean floor and bring new teeth ashore.

Must-Have Gear for Shark Tooth Hunting

Shark teeth can absolutely be found by simply walking the beach, I honestly didnโ€™t have luck doing it this way but i saw others who did! We choose to use tools to help us search for our teeth.

A sand sifter is the number one tool locals use.

Simply scoop sand from the waterline and shake it in the surf. The sand washes away while shells, rocks, and hopefully shark teeth remain behind. Some of the teeth are very obvious others are less obvious, but most are a black color.

small sand sifters that are all plastic might be more appropriate for tiny hands, however may not be as sturdy.

Once you start finding teeth, youโ€™ll need somewhere to stash your treasures!

Mesh bags are perfect because:

  • Sand falls right through
  • Theyโ€™re lightweight for kids
  • Easy to rinse in the ocean

Pro tip: Give each child their own treasure bag so they can proudly show off their finds.

Tips for Finding More Shark Teeth

Some teeth & shells we found

Here are a few tricks locals swear by:

  • Look for black triangle shapes in shell piles
  • Search where shells collect in clusters
  • Wade ankle-deep and sift sand from the bottom
  • Walk slowly and scan the shoreline carefully
  • Bring patience โ€” the hunt is half the fun!

Make It a Family Memory

Shark tooth hunting is one of those rare activities where nature, adventure, and curiosity come together perfectly for families.

Youโ€™re not just at the beach โ€” youโ€™re discovering tiny fossils from creatures that swam the ocean millions of years ago. Bring snacks, pack a picnic, and enjoy a slow day exploring the shoreline together.

And when you get home?
Start a family shark tooth collection jar , make a necklace or decorate a picture frame to remember your adventure.
